There is something about horror movies made in the late 1980s. When I watch them I can instantly tell that the movie is from that time. Why? Oh, wait.... there is a minor character in this movie with the most magnificent mullet hair cut I have ever seen! Anyways back to the review.
If you can manage to get over the fact that slugs just dont seem scary then this movie might just have something to interest you, but only if you have a strong desire to see a slug themed horror movie. Don't get me wrong slugs are quite slimey and I am sure many a keen gardener has cried in horror to find their lettuces have been savaged by hungry slugs. These slugs are, however, mutated and they have a taste for meat, particularly humans!
The plot is on face value quite simple, mutated slugs are breeding in the sewers in some town somewhere, and they are using the water supply to "surprise" their human victims. How can slugs surprise anyone? They are slow, surely you could just walk away? Apparently not, a lot of people lose all control of their limbs and roll about in the slugs. Its fun!
As I said the plot seems simple, but the movie really is such a mish mash of characters, none of which connect to each other or serve any purpose. The only characters with any continuity are the main male lead and the ineffective sheriff who of course scoffs at the very notion of killler slugs. The rest of the characters are there merely as slug food.
There are some completely over the top gore scenes. There is a scene with a gardener who gets a slug stuck inside his gardening glove that is quite gory. The other scene that stands out is the restaurant scene. After watching this movie I really dont want to eat luttuce for a while.
The gore aside this is just not a very good film. It really is so much of a mish mash. Halfway through the movie one of the characters says Happy Halloween, but there was literally nothing to indicate it was Halloween. The acting is painful to watch, and the dialogue is no unnatural it just makes you think...wtf!?
Unless you have a strong desire to watch a slug themed horror movie probably best to avoid this movie.
