A long time ago I watched Cannibal Holocaust (1980), it was a raw and nasty film from memory and it wasn't one I wanted to watch again. Step forward The Green Inferno, by director Eli Roth. Ordinarily I probably wouldn't watch this movie but in order to challenge myself for this blog I decided to watch and review this movie.

Whilst Cannibal Holocaust was a found footage style movie The Green Inferno is a more polished film. The film has a fairly straightforward plot, student activists fly into the depths of the jungle to stop "evil" mining, logging etc from displacing an indigenous society. Of course things dont exactly run to plan.

The movie is very much directed at those overly sensitive, politically correct types who think they will change the world. Their opinions are the only ones that matter, in their world everything is black and white. Personally I liked this aspect of the movie, it was a welcome change from the usual Hollywood liberal agenda.

Most of the characters in this movie are hateful, I was happy to see the activists get their comeuppance one by one. The only likeable character is the female lead who gets taken in by the rhetoric of the good looking student leader. He is perhaps the most hateful person in the film, but he is also paradoxically the most realistic.

I am not a liberal but even I found the portrayal of the indigenous people as rather ethnocentric and unduly nasty. I think if I was one of the indigenous people portrayed I would not be happy. In the whole society there was only one young boy who showed any kindness towards the captured students.

If you enjoy gore you will be happy to know there is more than enough gore for anyone. The scene involving the ritualistic sacrifice of one of the student activists is particularly gruesome. The acting is generally of a decent standard and the dialogue is decent also.

If you enjoy movies about cannibalism and like gore then you should definitely check this movie out.
