Spiders are great, they kill household pests. The spiders in this movie are different, they are alien spiders. They look a lot like spiders, behave a lot like spiders but the spider is a lot bigger than your earth type spiders. For me, a low budget spider movie is difficult not to like, and I am pleased to say this one is worth watching.
The movie starts with a figther pilot in pursuit of what appears to be an alien spacecraft, an awful CGI rendering of one at that. The pilot has to eject and the alien spacecraft crash lands. When the pilot goes to investigate an alien emerges and is promptly torn apart, seemingly from within, by a spider. Fast forward, a man in Guam dies from mysterious bites, that could be from a new spider species. An expedition is organised, with scientists and a security team boarding a plane. Of course nothing goes to plan and the plane crashes, and so the movie truly begins as the humans try to survive their encounters with the alien spiders.
I was worried the movie would have lots of awful CGI but thankfully it was kept to a minimum. As a result the giant spider to my eyes looks better than some awful CGI rendering. The acting is as you might expect for a low budget horror, not great, with the male lead Lev Valentine putting in the best performance. The rest of the cast are by no means awful, they are adequate. The pacing of the film is never boring but the plot is so predictable. You will guess who will live and who will die within ten minutes of watching the movie. There is some gore, but it is by no means a film that will satisfy gore hounds. At one stage in the movie it was almost in danger of becoming a low budget Predator rip off, as the jungle "comes alive" and stalks them, perhaps it was a tip of the cap, or completely unintentional.
Is it a great movie? Nope. Is it an enjoyable low budget spider movie? Yes. If you like low budget creature feature movies give it a chance, otherwise there are better movies to watch first.
