Some people collect trading cards, personally I collect guitars, but if you happen to be a serial killer you might collect people? Why not, seems a lot of work, but if you are willing to make a commitment then go for it. The Collector (2009) unfortunately doesnt just collect people, he also kills them.
Perhaps I have become increasingly jaded, but when this movie was released I can remember watching it, and finding the movie too graphic. I am not a fan of the torture porn genre, but viewing this movie now, whilst still not a fan of the genre I dont find the movie that troublesome. I guess in a world that has spawned the horrors of Syria this movie seems almost mild in comparison.
The Collector has a plot that is on surface value believable. That a serial killer might indeed kill people is probable, its what they do. The problem I have with The Collector is the sheer complexity of his modus operandi. The logistics of it must be an absolute nightmare, no wonder he seems so angry.
He has to change so many locks, install new ones, board up windows, install chandelier knife traps, set his bear traps, spread highly corrosive acid over floors, rig up scissor trap,, hang up his hook collection, install phone booby trap, room full of razor sharp wire, put razor blades on boarded up windows, chain up his pet dog and put his favourite human in a big travel chest. How does he find time for all this?
The Collector meets his match in Arkin, played by Josh Stewart. I really liked Josh Stewart in this movie, he is a good actor. He plays an ex con who has a speciality, breaking into the safes of the wealthy. He chooses the wrong house on the wrong night and what follows is a battle between two ninjas. Who will win? Would I spoil it if I told you there is a sequel?
For all my ridicule of the movie if you suspend your disbelief, it isnt a bad movie. There is certainly plenty of action, and you will be invested enough in the people to hope they can survive. If you enjoy gore you should be more than happy with this movie.
The bit of the movie I liked least was the ending.
Still a decent movie, 6 out of 10.
