The third instalment of Childs Play picks up where the last movie ended. Chucky had been killed, left to gather cobwebs in the doll factory. Turns out, eight years later, the company behind the Good Guy dolls has decided to start making them again. The remains of Chucky are dropped into a vat of molten plastic, and Chucky is reborn.
This movie, Childs Play 3, was quite a controversial movie in the UK as it was linked to the tragic murder of a young child at the hands of two older children. It was said that elements of the crime scene were comparable to the movie. Whether that was true I am unsure but there was a backlash against the movie. Now that time has passed the movie has lost a lot of the stigma and many fans love to watch these movies. Chucky is truly one of the icomic monsters of horror.
After Chucky is reborn he somehow manages to get inside a box and mail himself to Andy, who is now a teenager and enrolled in Kent military school. Things don't quite go as expected for Chucky, he needs to hide his soul but this time he has chosen another little boy. Can Andy stop him before he kills everyone? You will have to watch the movie to find that out. Andy is up against it, between a demonic doll and army officer's out to get him, he will need all the help he can get.
The plot really is rather non existent but its a Childs Play movie so it wasn't made with an Oscar in mind. They are made for fans of the franchise and fans want to see the wise cracking creepy doll kill as many people in different ways as possible. With that in mind the movie shouldn't dissapoint. Whether or not the movie will appeal beyond fans of the franchise is another matter. I would argue that beyond fans of the franchise this movie would not be good enough to warrant watching.
The movie is competent no doubt about that, but it is far from good. Whilst the murders are well done the film has no truly memorable or iconic moments. The animatronics of Chucky are well done, as is his voice. The dialogue is competent and Chucky has the usual twisted sense of humour. The acting is also of a decent standard. But a great film requires more.
This is very much a film that doesn't add up to more than the sum of its parts and is therefore not a great movie. However , as a sequel in a franchise involving horror movies just getting a watchable sequel can be difficult. My own view is that if you are a fan of Childs Play you should check it out. If you are just a fan of horror there are better movies to watch.
