This movie is considered by some to be the grandfather of gore. There is no doubting that back in 1963 this movie was probably quite shocking. There is mutilation, killings, whipping and blood galore but does thiat make it a good movie? In my opinion, no this is a truly awful movie. Paradoxically, it is so dreadful, so incompetent, that it is good. You will be hard pressed not to laugh, it really works better if you simply view it as comedy.
The plot is absolutely ludicrous. An Egyptian man called Fuad Ramses with crazy eyes, and a limp, also happens to be a caterer. The man is also seemingly a member of a cult that worship an Egyptian god Ishtar. In the strange world of this movie there are only two things happening, murders and a dinner party. Wealthy socialites are having a gathering, and they have to have something wonderfully unique. Step up man with crazy eyes, he will do the catering, but first he needs to kill multiple women for the ingredients. A leg here, a tongue there, its a strange soup, I think?
This movie is truly awful, watching it I was shocked that it is comparable to Corpse Grinders and Manos: the Hands of Fate. The acting in Blood Feast is actually worse than Corpse Grinders and Manos. Every single actor in this is unable to act. It is almost like they deliberately chose people who studied the art of non acting. The scenery is just chumped on constantly. The overacting is so outrageously awful that you will laugh. The hospital scene is hilarious and reminded me of the film Disorderly Orderly with Jerry Lewis. When the patient dies, from a wound to her face, they barely bother to try to save her.
The cinematography is dreadful, I have seen home movies filmed better. The dialogue is just pure cheese. The gore effects are also awful. The action scenes are filmed from angles that obscure the sightline of the viewer, you only get to see the aftermath, and the gore resulting is rather silly looking. I am struggling to find a positive in this movie but there is something in its favour, it is absolutely hilariously awful. From the beginning to the end it is dreadfully funny.
The ending to the film comes out of nowhere. All of a sudden our pagan loving wild eyed Egyptian is running through a waste dump. Then after the film has ended it doesn't end, we get an explanation of how they stopped the killer. The police men literally talk for what seemed like a life time, but was probably only a minute.
If you like bad movies you will love this one.
As a horror movie 1 out of 10
