I know what you are thinking, this is a movie about Hillary Clinton but I can reassure you that having watched the movie she is in no way involved. Phew. Instead Satan's Slaves (2017) is a movie about a satanic cult, ghosts, zombies and murder! There is a bit of everything, like a horror buffet, on offer. The question is did it sate my horror hunger or give me a bad case of diarrhea? On balance, it was a bit stodgy and bloated, but it was good enough to recommend.
The movie begins with a family of seven, a mum and dad, a grandmother, three brothers and a sister. The mother was once upon a time a successful singer but is now bed ridden with illness. The family are struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Events start to take a turn for the worse after the mum dies. Supernatural events start to occur. These supernatural events get worse after the father leaves to find employment. The grandmother then ends up dead at the bottom of the well and things start to get even worse. After seeking help from a friend of their late grandmother they begin to suspect that a satanic cult wants to take their youngest brother away. Can they stop them? Watch the movie and find out.
The movie plot is akin somewhat to Rosemarys baby but with its own unique spin. The movie was clever enough to fool me, just as I thought I had figured out what was going to happen it pulled the rug out from under me. I would say, however, the movie is guilty of trying to cram too much variety into one movie whilst at the same time it was very slow paced. The movie covers satanic cults, ghosts and zombies. For myself I thought the zombies were overdoing things. The movie could have been half an hour shorter and would still have had the same impact in my opinion.
The special effects and imagery are quite similar to movies such as The Ring or The Grudge. There is nothing wrong with that but I think many horror fans are so used to that imagery that it loses some of its impact. That said the movie delivers when it comes to creepy atmosphere. The acting is in general very good and the family are very likeable. You will feel invested in their fate. I like it when a movie gives me characters that are likeable, some just give you hateful morons that you don't care about. There is even some gore, although not enough to keep gore fans happy.
If you can put aside the slow pace, and the overwhelming variety of supernatural phenomena, there is a good movie. Perhaps the ending was a little too contrived and cliche but in an era of remakes and reboots this is a minor fault.
6 out of 10
Summary: slow pace,, but decent horror movie.
