The Hollow is a 2015 made for TV movie with a low IMDB score. Perfect, that is just the sort of movie I like to watch every now and again. I rather enjoy bad movies, my theory is thus: if I watch bad movies I can write about how awful they are or, every now and again I unearth a gem of a movie that has been unfairly treated. This movie is the latter I am happy to confirm.
The plot of the movie revolves around three sisters: Sarah, Marley and Emma. Emma is recovering what a car accident that claimed the lives of her mother and father. As a result of their death, and her mounting hospital fees, the three sisters have to sell up and move in with their Aunt who lives on Shelter Island. Sounds homely, well it is and it isnt! It just so happens to be the 100th anniversary of a terrible storm that killed half of the population, and guess what, another storm is brewing and its Halloween! Oh oh! The sisters reach the island only to find out their Aunt has been mutilated and burnt from the inside out. Someone or something is killing people, something is dragging people into the woods. In order to survive they must team up with what is left of the townsfolk but will they live to see the sun rise?
The cinematography of the movie was surprisingly good, considering this was a made for TV movie. I like movies that feature woods, I guess I just like woods, and this movie captured how foreboding and overwhelming they can be. The special effects, the CGI, is not that good but there again it is not awful. To me CGI rarely looks good, even on big budget movies but that is my opinion and many people would not agree. The acting is generally good, although in some scenes it felt a bit flat, almost without emotion, but still good enough not to spoil anything. The "monster" itself, leaving aside the cgi, had some originality and that is never a bad thing. All in all a gem of a movie that really should have a higher IMDB score.
7 out of 10
Summary: entertaining made for TV movie set on an island and featuring woods and a witches curse. Worth a watch certainly!
