This movie, how to sum it up? Think Sweeney Todd crossed with a Benny Hill sketch and set in America. From start to finish this movie is pure cheese, this is a movie that refuses to take itself seriously in any way, shape, or form. To me this movie is a comedy movie, with a little horror thrown into the mix. Does the mix work? I am pleased to say yes, this is, as far as I am concerned an entertaining movie.
The plot of the movie revolves around three locations: the funeral home, a greasy spoon cafe and a Private investigator's office. Mort is a struggling undertaker, he is finding it difficult to pay the bills. Like any sane citizen he teams up with two lunatics who run the local greasy spoon cafe. They choose a victim, grab their motorbikes and go murder them. The undertaker gets to burry the victim, charging an arm and a leg (pun intended). The greasy spoon cafe gets to keep parts of the victims that they use to make the days special dish. One of their victims is the typist for Harry Glass, a private detective. She was also his girlfriend. He sets out for revenge, but will it be a dish best served cold (pun intended).
There is no doubting this is a low budget movie but rather than try to fool the viewer that it is not low budget it instead revels in its cheapness. The scenes involving the cafe for instance, there is virtually no resemblance to a cafe, at least not any cafe I have ever seen. The acting is flamboyantly over the top, the undertaker is particularly fantastic. Puns are fired at the audience like hand grenades, and just in case we are so obtuse we don't get the joke the actor will look directly at the camera to let us know. It is a joke, the whole movie is a joke, but it works. I think it successfully entertains due to the short run time, it is a short movie, so the plot doesn't have to stretch too far, and the puns never get too monotonous.
6 out of 10 (as a comedy its a cheese feast)
Summary: corny good fun.
